How Pay by Plate Works
DriveERT has implemented all-electronic tolling at the I-264 Downtown Tunnel and US 58 Midtown Tunnel connecting the cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk in Hampton Roads, Virginia. This means that gantries, similar to over-the-road sign structures, are used to collect tolls. There is not a cash option, nor traditional toll booths, available for toll payment.
All-electronic tolling allows vehicles to use the toll facility at the posted speeds assisting with the free flow of traffic. Tolls are paid through an active E-ZPass account or a Pay by Plate invoice mailed to the license plate holder’s address as registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
